Team Accord: Jordan Heighton, Digital Strategist

Meet Jordan, our dynamic and forward-thinking Digital Strategist. With a passion for all things digital, Jordan brings a wealth of expertise to our team.

What inspired you to start a career in performance marketing?

Having left school after my AS Levels and gone straight into full-time work, I have always tried to identify the key parts of a role that I enjoy and build upon that with any new position. I had previously been involved in reporting and data-type roles and enjoyed these aspects of the work.  Therefore, an entry analyst role seemed like the perfect next challenge for me. I can’t say that digital marketing has always been my dream career; before I applied at Accord, I knew nothing about it! Only after some pre-interview research and an initial interview did I realise how much opportunity there was in the industry.

What is your role, and what do you enjoy most about it?

My role involves working with our clients to ensure that their digital activity is aligned with their business goals, identifying new ways in which their data can be used to enhance digital performance and provide additional, meaningful insights. I really enjoy the fact my role is so varied. Every client is different, and the industry is constantly changing and evolving. The media is always releasing new products and features; there’s certainly never a dull moment!

What project are you most proud of?

I have been working closely with the agricultural retailer Mole Valley Farmers since we onboarded them earlier this year. A large part of my initial work was developing a new digital strategy to help them achieve their goals of increasing store footfall and growing their e-commerce business. We are now looking at new opportunities to help drive further performance efficiencies, incorporating additional data sources to provide a wider reporting solution and improve processes to ensure the media runs smoothly. Best of all, Mole Valley Farmers is a South-West company, so it’s great to help a local business.

And what do you find the most challenging?

Accepting that I can’t know everything… I love nothing more than diving into something and finding out as much as possible, even down to the minute details, so I can fully understand its workings. But you’ve got to know when to hold yourself back and accept a broad overview.

What do you get up to in your spare time outside of work?

I have a young child and two energetic dogs, so spare time is somewhat of a luxury! When those windows arise, I can typically be found in my office playing on my computer and realising how I can’t keep up with the kids nowadays. I also enjoy going to the cinema to watch the latest releases, although I don’t get to see as many films as I would like.  I at least try to keep up with the MCU.

What advice would you give to someone starting in the industry?

Surround yourself with knowledgeable people; there’s never a stupid question, and don’t be afraid to try something new. Digital marketing is a vast field; you can’t know it all, so you need to surround yourself with experts in their field and ask them questions to help your own understanding. In an ever-changing industry, new products, tools and features are always being released, and the only way to truly know their worth is to try them – by try, I mean give them the opportunity to succeed before you deem them a failure. There are still learnings to be taken from a failed test, even if it’s just that it doesn’t work as you’d hoped - at least you know!

If you could swap your role with anyone else in the company, who would it be?

As someone who strictly works in numbers and logic, I have always struggled to be creative. It would be a great experience to work within the Creative team and see what I could produce and if it would be any good!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Curveball, the ability to shapeshift into any animal I wanted at any time. Not only could I experience the life of any animal, I could fly, breathe underwater or run with wolves, but most importantly, I could communicate and play with my dogs! What could go wrong?!

What’s the most interesting book, podcast, or movie you’ve read/watched recently?

Oppenheimer was an incredible film, a fascinating watch, and another of Christopher Nolan’s amazing accomplishments! It is a conflicted tale of an incredibly talented man who ultimately suffers from the consequences of his dedication to his field and his country.

What’s something on your bucket list that you haven’t had the chance to do yet?

Unfortunately, our honeymoon was impacted by COVID, so our American road trip from San Fransisco to LA to Las Vegas, in a Mustang, was cancelled and replaced with a Cornish road trip. Cornwall was lovely, but it wasn’t quite the same as America, so we’re determined to fulfil that dream in the future.
